Magpie Counseling

is a Professional Limited Liability Corporation owned and operated by Kathleen Blume, LCSW, LAC.

Magpies are intelligent birds that are said to symbolize luck, love, and good fortune. On the other hand, some people believe they symbolize deception and illusion. I believe magpies are a magnificent, natural example of the duality of life and recovery.

MY SPECIALTIES

  • Addiction

From wanting to cut down on substance use to being committed to a life of recovery, I work with you at every stage of your journey with a nonjudgemental approach.

  • RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships with romantic partners, family members, and friends can be stressful. I’m here to help you create boundaries and improve communication skills.

  • MENTAL HEALTH

I have experience working with a range of challenges including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. We can work together to strengthen your coping skills and live authentically.

EMDR

I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), the leading evidence-based practice for treating trauma. Often when we experience something traumatic, our brain stores the memories in unhelpful ways that can negatively impact our daily functioning. EMDR helps us untangle and reprocess these experiences, allowing us to be free from the heaviness and dysfunction. While we will still remember what happened, the way we remember will be changed for the better.

  • "Kat exudes acceptance, warmth, and empathy in her calm and still presence. Her clinical skills are rooted in a deep understanding of systems that perpetuate cycles of trauma and addiction. While she is a strong and grounded therapist, she also brings a lightness in her sense of humor which helps clients feel seen and connected."

    Caley Braun, LCSW

  • "Dear Kat, you have a tremendous way of putting people at ease-you certainly did me. You make the hard times of people's lives a little fuzzier and warmer."

    Letter from a former client

  • "Kat is someone who walks into a room and immediately brightens it. You just want to make her proud."

About Me

I became a therapist because many of my loved ones were struggling with addiction and I wanted to be able to help - both on an individual and community level. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC). I enjoy working with teenagers and adults. I work part-time so I can dedicate myself fully to the clients I am serving while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. When I’m not seeing clients, I am likely hiking with Jax, traveling with my spouse, reading a book, or working on a puzzle or craft.
